Russian optical fiber is 8 years old!

On this day, 8 years ago Optic fiber Systems JSC (further OVS) engineers received the first drop and the first samples of domestic optical fiber, which marked the creation of a new industry in Russia – the production of telecommunication optical fiber.

After 8 years since the technical launch of production, the Company has moved far ahead and proved the quality of its products in the Russian and foreign markets. But the main achievement of the past years is the team formed of highly qualified specialists in the field of fiber optics. The accumulated long-term experience allows OVS to remain a leader in terms of competencies in the field of optical fiber production in Russia.

Despite the sanctions and the withdrawal of key raw material suppliers from the Russian market, Optic fiber Systems JSC resumed production and supply of optical fiber to its customers. The production capacities of the enterprise allow satisfying more than 50% of the demand in the Russian market.

Today, OVS is actively developing a project to build a preform plant with an increase in production capacity up to 10 million km of optical fiber per year, which will completely meet the needs of the Russian market and the EAEU countries.

The strategic importance of the domestic production of optical fiber has been repeatedly emphasized at the highest state level. Thus, in February 2023, President of Russia Vladimir Putin instructed the Government of the Russian Federation to take measures, together with the State Development Corporation VEB.RF, to ensure the launch of a full cycle of optical fiber production in the Russian Federation in 2024.

“Optic fiber Systems” JSC ( – is the first and the only Russian plant manufacturing optical fiber. The plant is situated in Saransk, Mordovia Republic. It was officially opened on 25 September 2015. The shareholders of the company are RUSNANO, Gazprombank and the Government of Mordovia Republic.

Optical fiber is the main component of optic cables for signal transmission in modern communication networks. Fiber is also used as a sensor for monitoring deformation, temperature, acoustics and other indicators.

"Optic fiber Systems" JSC produces telecommunication optical fibers of standards G652 and G 657 A1 including those with reduced diameter of 200 microns; provides services on optical fiber coloring and the application of ring marks "ringmarking". Optical fibers of new types such as G651 and G655 are being prepared for release. Products are certified in Russia and the quality is confirmed by "Rostelecom" PJSC, Russia's leading cable companies and foreign consumers.

According to the results of certification, optical fiber was approved for use on the networks of the largest Russian Telecom operators Rostelecom, MTS, MegaFon and others.

Manufacturing capacity of the plant is 4 mln kilometers of optical fiber per year.
